Welcome

Welcome to the Environmental Studies Program at UMass Boston.

The undergraduate Environmental Studies Program (ESP) at UMass Boston is an interdisciplinary program of study that helps students understand the underlying causes of environmental problems and encourages a search for solutions. In recognition of the complexity of environmental issues, the Program is broadly based in the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences.

The Environmental Studies Program supplements a student’s chosen major. In addition to satisfying the requirements of a major within an academic department, students in the ESP complete a set of core courses, do advanced work in their chosen area of specialization, and work on an environmental internship. ESP courses may be used simultaneously to satisfy the general education distribution and core requirements in the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Science and Mathematics.

ESP offers two tracks that provide environmental literacy and advanced problem-solving skills to any UMass Boston student. The Environmental Science Track is designed for students in the natural sciences, while the Environment and Society Track is designed for students in the social sciences and humanities.
